Year 1

(Currently 18 pupils)

Mr Wright is our Year 1 teacher this year and with support from Mrs Pickering, has really enjoyed working with and learning about the talented pupils.

The first topic Year 1 will learn about this Summer Term in entitled 'Sailing the Seven Seas'.

In our topic 'Sailing the Seven Seas':

In Literacy we will be using our writing skills to create work linked to class texts including 'Quest' by Aaron Becker, 'Treasure Island' by Robert Louis Stevenson and using Talk4Writing to innovate the story of Kassim and the Greedy Pirate's Treasure. We will be writing our own pirate stories and examining ways in which we can improve our writing to make it more interesting. In Guided Reading we will be continuing to  focus on improving our pace of decoding whilst developing our inference skills by discussing characters and their actions in texts we read.

In Maths we will be using layered targets to improve our basic skills of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s using number lines and arrays. We will be revisiting and consolidating our knowledge of multiplication and division before consolidating addition and subtraction skills.

Year 1 will be continue to learn about Seasonal Changes and the weather in Science, specifically the role of the sun, what it is, what it does and how it is essential to survival, day length and plant life. In our Geography Topic, we will be revisiting using maps and symbols to plan and follow journeys.  In History we will be learning about the landmark voyages of ships and their Captains in history and the discoveries of continents around the world. In RE we will be concentrating on moral values.

The Spring term was a delight to teach this Year 1 class and I'm looking forward to this exciting new half term taking us up to the final break before the end of this school year; if you have any questions, please get in touch. smiley

Thank you!

Mr Wright
