PE & Sports Premium Funding
Our PE and School Sport Offer
At Backworth Park Primary School, we believe that physical education, sport and physical activity play an important role in helping children develop healthy, active lifestyles. Through PE lessons, extracurricular clubs, competitions and leadership opportunities, we aim to ensure that every child can participate, develop their skills and experience success.
Our PE curriculum provides pupils with a broad range of experiences across games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and swimming. These support pupils to develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, physical competence, confidence, resilience and teamwork. PE is delivered twice weekly, with opportunities for pupils to build on their learning through additional sporting activities and events.
We provide opportunities for pupils to participate in extracurricular clubs, represent the school in sporting competitions and take part in inter-house activities. We aim to offer a broad range of experiences that develop enjoyment, cooperation, sportsmanship and a lifelong interest in physical activity.
Physical Activity
We recognise the importance of helping pupils to be active throughout the school day, as well as during PE lessons. We provide opportunities for pupils to be physically active through breaktimes, lunchtimes, clubs, sporting events and other activities across the school year.
House Games and Pupil Leadership
Our House Games programme provides opportunities for pupils to participate in activities, represent their house and contribute to our whole-school sporting community. We value participation, teamwork, personal improvement and sportsmanship alongside competition and achievement.
Through our Sports Leaders programme, pupils have opportunities to develop leadership, responsibility and communication skills while supporting sporting activities and encouraging others to participate.
We also work with external coaches and local sporting organisations to broaden pupils' experiences and provide additional opportunities to develop their skills and take part in sport.
Celebrating Achievement
Backworth Park Primary School is proud to have achieved the Platinum School Games Award, recognising our commitment to school sport and physical activity.
We continue to develop our sporting provision by increasing opportunities for pupils to compete, lead, participate and enjoy being physically active. We aim to ensure that all pupils, regardless of ability, experience or confidence, feel that PE and sport are for them.
PE and Sport Premium Funding
The PE and Sport Premium is government funding provided to primary schools to support additional and sustainable improvements to PE, school sport and physical activity.
At Backworth Park, this funding supports the development of sporting opportunities, staff expertise, participation and access to competition. We use it to help improve provision for pupils and build sustainable opportunities that will benefit children in future years.
Our annual funding report sets out the funding received, how it has been spent, the impact on pupils and our plans for sustaining improvements. It also includes our Year 6 swimming and water-safety outcomes.
Swimming and Water Safety
Swimming and water safety are important parts of our PE provision. Pupils currently receive swimming lessons in Year 5, delivered by qualified swimming instructors.
Our programme aims to develop pupils' confidence and competence in the water, their effective use of a range of strokes, and their ability to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
We monitor pupils' progress against the National Curriculum swimming and water-safety expectations and use this information to identify where further support or opportunities may be needed.
In our Year 6 cohort:
- 73% can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- 71% can use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- 71% can perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
